What is APA?
APA (advance provisioning allowance) is an advance payment for running costs: fuel, food and drinks, marina fees and communication. It is usually 25–35 % of the charter fee. The captain keeps a record; unused money is refunded, additional costs are paid at the end.
VAT on yacht charters
VAT is charged on top of the charter fee and depends on the country where the charter starts: e.g. 20 % in France and Monaco, 22 % in Italy, 21 % in Spain, 13 % in Croatia, 12 % in Greece. In the Caribbean there is usually no VAT.
Crew tip
On crewed yachts a tip of 10–15 % of the charter fee is customary. It is given to the captain at the end of the charter and shared with the crew.
